Where to fill up, and where to wait?

An analysis of prices on the ground points to a few clear rules worth remembering before you set off:

• Bargain zones: North Macedonia and Bosnia and Herzegovina hold the lowest prices in the region. If you're passing through these countries, take the chance to fill the tank all the way up.

• The exception in Serbia: Serbia leads the immediate region in price levels, especially when it comes to diesel.

• Transit strategy: If you're heading west, it's smarter to fill up in Slovenia or Austria than in Germany or Switzerland, where prices are considerably higher.

Golden rules for extra savings

• Avoid motorway petrol stations: fuel prices right on the motorways are on average 5%–20% higher than at petrol stations in nearby towns.

• Check your tyre pressure: driving with underinflated tyres increases resistance and can raise fuel consumption by up to 5%.

• Drive smoothly: a constant speed without sudden acceleration and braking brings the biggest savings on long drives.
