About the crossing

Bregana is the largest border crossing between Croatia and Slovenia, on the Zagreb–Ljubljana motorway — Croatia's A3 continues into Slovenia's A2, both part of European route E70, which runs on through Ljubljana, Trieste and Turin to Bordeaux. The Slovenian side of the crossing is Obrežje. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, joining Slovenia, a member since 2007, this is now an internal Schengen border — under normal circumstances there are no border checks, just a drive-through past the old checkpoints. That hasn't been the rule without exception, though: from October 2023 until 11 June 2026, Slovenia periodically reintroduced targeted checks on the border with Croatia, citing security concerns, which added up to 45 minutes of waiting for drivers, especially truckers. Since those checks were lifted, Bregana has gone back to functioning as a fully open border. It remains, given the volume of traffic between Zagreb and Ljubljana, one of the busiest crossings on the entire Croatia–Slovenia border, so sudden backups are still possible even without official checks.
