About the crossing

Kafasan is a border crossing between North Macedonia and Albania, on the shore of Lake Ohrid, about 12 km southwest of Struga. On the Albanian side it is known as Qafë Thanë — a mountain pass between the lake and the Jablanica mountains, where road E852 ends. It is one of the busiest crossings on the North Macedonia–Albania border and forms part of Pan-European Corridor VIII, which on paper links Durrës on the Albanian coast with Varna on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast, running through North Macedonia and Bulgaria. On the Albanian side, a new highway between Elbasan and Qafë Thanë, about 50 km long, has been under construction since December 2022, meant to significantly cut driving time to Tirana and support tourism development in southeastern Albania — parts of the works are still ongoing. Macedonian and Albanian authorities have set up joint one-stop control at this crossing, where customs and border checks happen at a single point instead of two separate ones, speeding up the crossing. Because of its lakeside location, it is also used by tourists traveling between Ohrid and Albanian lakeside towns such as Pogradec.
