About the crossing
Kapitan Andreevo is the busiest land border crossing in Europe and the second-busiest freight crossing in the world — on the A1/E80 motorway toward Istanbul, open 24 hours. It is known as Kapıkule on the Turkish side. More than 15,000 vehicles pass through daily, with a record day of over 3,400 commercial vehicles in 24 hours. Because of that volume, a major reconstruction worth about €43.5 million has been underway since August 2026, running in three stages over 12 months and aiming to boost the crossing's capacity by 25% — the number of truck inspection lanes is growing from three to seven, new X-ray scanners and covered inspection areas are being added, and traffic is not being halted during the works. Turkey belongs to neither the EU nor Schengen, so regardless of Bulgaria's full Schengen membership since January 2025, full border and customs control always applies here — this is an external EU border. There is no camera at this crossing, so traffic conditions here are not tracked on this site.
