Medžitlija

About the crossing

Medžitlija is a border crossing between North Macedonia and Greece south of Bitola, on route E65. The village of Medžitlija sits 14 km south of Bitola, while Niki, as the crossing is known on the Greek side, is 14 km north of Florina; Thessaloniki and Skopje are roughly equidistant from here, about 190 km each. This is the smaller of the two main North Macedonia–Greece road crossings, carrying far less traffic than Bogorodica/Gevgelija, which makes it the faster choice in summer for travelers wanting to avoid the longer wait on the main route. The area on both sides of the border remains less developed — some infrastructure on the North Macedonian side was rebuilt in the late 1990s with EU funding. As at Bogorodica, Greece belongs to the EU and Schengen while North Macedonia belongs to neither, so full border control always applies here regardless of how small and quiet the crossing feels. For travelers from Bitola and the surrounding area, this is the natural route toward western Greece and onward to the coast, while heavier freight and tourist traffic still tends to favor Bogorodica.
