Merdare is an administrative crossing between central Serbia and Kosovo, near Kuršumlija, on state road IB-35, which runs Niš–Prokuplje–Kuršumlija–Podujevo–Priština and forms part of the regional SEETO Route 7 network. Unlike most road crossings, most of the traffic here is trucks and freight vehicles rather than passenger cars — Merdare functions primarily as a freight corridor for goods moving between central Serbia and the south, and onward toward Priština. Highway construction is underway on both sides, meant to eventually link Niš and Priština; on the Serbian side, work has reached as far as Lebane, while on the Kosovo side roughly 24 kilometers of road still need to be built to reach the crossing itself. Until that link is finished, traffic still runs on the older two-lane road, so trucks here tend to wait considerably longer than passenger vehicles. Merdare is one of several administrative crossings along the boundary line with Kosovo, alongside Jarinje, Brnjak and Končulj, and has historically seen occasional closures and incidents, so it's worth checking whether the crossing is currently open before setting out.
