Kostajnica is a border crossing over a bridge on the Una river, linking Bosanska Kostajnica in Republika Srpska with Hrvatska Kostajnica on the opposite bank. The crossing in its current form has operated since 2003, when it reopened after the war, and continues on as road M-14 on the Bosnian side and state road D47 on the Croatian side. The place has a longer history as a river crossing than you might expect: back in the early 19th century, under French administration, a wooden bridge was built between the two Kostajnicas, topped with an obelisk bearing Napoleon's initials, and for a long time it was the only bridge on the Una carrying trade goods between the Middle East and Europe. The border here still isn't fully settled down to the last detail — a small river island between the two towns remains a point of dispute between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, though that doesn't affect day-to-day traffic over the bridge. As elsewhere on this border, it has been a full external Schengen border since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, so documents are checked on every crossing, regardless of nationality.
