About the crossing

Kozarska Dubica is a border crossing on the Una river, between the town of the same name in Republika Srpska and Hrvatska Dubica on the opposite bank, a few kilometers upstream from where the Una flows into the Sava. Officially it's classified as a smaller crossing than nearby Donja Gradina downstream, and its main role is to take pressure off that crossing when it backs up. This stretch of the Una saw fighting during the 1990s war — on 18 September 1995, the Croatian army crossed the river here and took part of what was then Bosanska Dubica (today Kozarska Dubica) — and traffic here today still runs at a noticeably smaller scale than at the main crossings along this border. As along the whole Bosnia and Herzegovina–Croatia border, this has been a full external Schengen border since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023 — documents are checked for everyone crossing, regardless of nationality. The crossing is mainly used by local residents of Kozarska Dubica and Hrvatska Dubica, as well as travelers looking to avoid queues at Donja Gradina.
