Višegrad is an unusual border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Serbia — a water crossing rather than a road one, on Lake Perućac, an artificial reservoir on the Drina created in 1966 when the Bajina Bašta hydroelectric plant was built. The lake runs through the Drina canyon between Bajina Bašta on the Serbian side and Višegrad on the Bosnian side, right along the edge of Tara National Park. Serbia's Ministry of Interior officially lists it as a river border crossing, but there is no permanent checkpoint on the lake itself — since border police from both countries cannot physically check every crossing on the spot, every boat crossing has to be registered with both countries' border police at least two days in advance. The tourist season on the lake runs from June to August, when agencies run boat excursions between Perućac and Višegrad, so this crossing is mostly associated with that kind of traffic rather than regular road transit.
