About the crossing

Brod is a border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, over a bridge on the Sava river — the Croatian side is Slavonski Brod, directly across the water. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, this is a full external Schengen border: documents are checked for everyone, EU citizens included, since Bosnia and Herzegovina belongs to neither the EU nor Schengen. Slavonski Brod is the largest town in Croatia's Brod-Posavina County and grew up historically around this very river crossing, while Brod, on the Bosnian side, sits within Republika Srpska. Before the newer Svilaj bridge crossing opened downstream in 2021 — part of Corridor Vc, linking the A1 motorway in Bosnia directly with the A5 in Croatia — most road traffic between Croatia's Slavonia region and Bosnia's Posavina ran through here and through nearby Šamac and Orašje. Today Svilaj carries most of the long-distance, through traffic along Corridor Vc, leaving Brod mainly to serve travelers actually headed into these two towns rather than passing through. For anyone moving between Slavonski Brod and the Bosnian Posavina, this remains the shortest, most direct route across the border.
