About the crossing

Šamac is a border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, over a bridge on the Sava river, opposite Slavonski Šamac. Like neighboring Brod, this crossing sits in Croatia's Brod-Posavina County on the Croatian side, while Šamac (also known as Bosanski Šamac) on the Bosnian side belongs to Republika Srpska. Croatia has been in the Schengen Area since January 2023, so this is a full external Schengen border — document checks apply to everyone crossing, Bosnian and EU citizens alike, since Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside both the EU and Schengen. Along with Brod and Orašje, this crossing long carried most of the road traffic over the Sava in this stretch of Posavina, until the motorway crossing at Svilaj opened downstream to the east in 2021 — a direct link between the A1 motorway in Bosnia and the A5 in Croatia, part of Corridor Vc. Since Svilaj opened, most long-distance transit and freight traffic has shifted there, leaving Šamac to mainly serve local traffic between the two towns and the surrounding riverside area.
