About the crossing

Donji Svilaj is a border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, over a bridge on the Sava river near Odžak — part of Corridor Vc (E73), which runs from Budapest through Croatia and Bosnia to the port of Ploče on the Adriatic. The Croatian side of the crossing is Svilaj. This is the only crossing on this stretch of the border that directly links the motorways of both countries: Croatia's A5 with Bosnia's A1. A short section of the A5 between the Sredanci and Svilaj interchanges opened in 2015, while the bridge over the Sava itself and the border crossing alongside it only opened in 2021, giving Corridor Vc its first full motorway link over the Sava on this stretch. Before that, most traffic between Croatia's Slavonia region and Bosnia's Posavina, freight included, ran through the older crossings at Brod, Šamac and Orašje, none of which sit on a motorway. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, Donji Svilaj is a full external Schengen border, with document checks for everyone crossing. As the motorway crossing on one of the key Pan-European corridors, it now carries most of the long-distance and freight traffic heading beyond Posavina itself, while the older crossings to the west and east lean more on local traffic.
