Horgoš is the main border crossing between Serbia and Hungary, on the E75 motorway toward Szeged. The crossing point on the Hungarian side is the village of Röszke. There are actually two separate checkpoints here: Horgoš 1, on the motorway itself, open 24 hours for both passenger cars and freight traffic, and the smaller Horgoš 2, a short distance away, which handles passenger vehicles only and keeps fixed hours (07:00–19:00). Horgoš 1 is one of the two main road links carrying freight between Serbia and the EU, alongside Kelebija to the west. Hungary has been part of the Schengen Area since 2007, so this is a full external Schengen border with document checks for everyone entering the EU — including EU citizens, since Serbia sits outside both the EU and Schengen. If Horgoš is congested, Kelebija, Bački Vinogradi and Bajmok all offer alternative routes into Hungary further west, though only Kelebija also takes freight; the others are passenger-vehicles only. On the Hungarian side, the E75 continues on toward Szeged and Budapest.
