About the crossing

Orašje is a border crossing between Bosnia and Herzegovina and Croatia, over a bridge on the Sava river, opposite Županja. Unlike the neighboring crossings at Brod and Šamac, whose Bosnian side sits in Republika Srpska, Orašje belongs to the Federation of Bosnia and Herzegovina — specifically Posavina Canton, a small, elongated canton along the river where Orašje is the largest town. Županja, on the Croatian side, lies in Vukovar-Srijem County, in eastern Slavonia. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, this is a full external Schengen border — documents are checked for everyone crossing, since Bosnia and Herzegovina is outside both the EU and Schengen. Along with nearby Brod and Šamac, this crossing long carried most of the road traffic over the Sava in this part of Posavina, until the new motorway crossing at Svilaj opened in 2021 — a direct link between the A1 motorway in Bosnia and the A5 in Croatia, part of Corridor Vc, which took over most of the long-distance transit traffic. Orašje today still serves as a practical link for traffic actually headed into these two towns and the wider area of Posavina Canton and Vukovar-Srijem County.
