About the crossing

Debeli Brijeg is the main border crossing between Montenegro and Croatia, on the Adriatic coastal road (route D8) between Herceg Novi and Dubrovnik. The Croatian side of the crossing is Karasovići. It operates 24 hours a day and carries the largest share of overall traffic between the two countries on this route, so it regularly sees the longest queues of any Croatia–Montenegro crossing, especially in summer and around holidays. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, this is a full external Schengen border on the Croatian side — passport checks apply to everyone entering the EU here, since Montenegro is outside both the EU and Schengen. When Debeli Brijeg/Karasovići backs up, Vitaljina, a short way inland in Konavle, offers a less congested alternative, though it carries far less traffic. The crossing links two of the busiest tourist coastlines on the Adriatic — the Montenegrin riviera around Herceg Novi and the Bay of Kotor, and the Dubrovnik coast — making it one of the key gateways for travelers moving between the two destinations, particularly in the summer months.
