About the crossing

Vitaljina is a border crossing between Croatia and Montenegro in the Konavle area, southeast of Dubrovnik. The Montenegrin side of the crossing is called Kobila. It opened on 14 June 2019, with four lanes for passenger vehicles; construction cost more than €3.3 million, funded by Croatia's Ministry of Finance. The aim was to relieve pressure on the main Debeli Brijeg/Karasovići crossing on the Adriatic coastal road, which carries by far the larger share of traffic between the two countries. Since Croatia joined the Schengen Area in January 2023, this is a full external Schengen border on the Croatian side — passport checks apply to everyone entering the EU here, since Montenegro is outside both the EU and Schengen. Konavle is the southernmost part of Croatia, a narrow coastal strip between Mount Snježnica and the sea, and the road to Vitaljina runs through it. For travelers who know the route, Vitaljina is often the faster option when longer queues build up at the main crossing, especially in summer and on weekends.
